Will a two-post lift fit your ceiling?

Of everything that cancels a two-post order after the fact, ceiling height is the single most common one. Ten minutes with a tape measure before you commit to a model saves the conversation nobody wants to have on delivery day.

Measure the right number

Measure floor to the lowest obstruction, not floor to the ceiling itself. In a real garage the lowest point is almost never the drywall or the rafters. It is usually one of these:

  • the garage door track, typically hanging 2 to 3 inches below the ceiling along the length of the bay
  • the door opener rail and motor, lower still, often right down the centre where the vehicle sits
  • lights, ducting or sprinkler heads in an unfinished ceiling
  • a collar tie or purlin in a pitched roof

If you measure to the drywall and buy on that figure, the door track is where the mistake shows up.

The rough arithmetic

For a clear-floor two-post, the working relationship is:

ceiling height − vehicle height − overhead assembly ≈ usable lift height

The overhead assembly carries the equalisation cable and shutoff bar on a clear-floor design and typically wants close to a foot of its own. That is a first filter, not a specification — it varies by model, which is exactly why the calculator on this site's homepage exists and why every listing here states the manufacturer's own figure where we hold it (currently 8 of 71 models).

At a 10ft ceiling with a 70in vehicle, that leaves roughly 38 inches of lift — enough to work under a car comfortably, not enough to stand fully upright beneath a tall one. It is why people who can manage 12ft usually wish they had.

What changes at each height

Under 9ft. A two-post is unlikely to fit with meaningful clearance, and we are not going to pretend otherwise to make a sale — this site only carries two-post lifts, so if that is your situation, a different configuration entirely is the honest answer, not a lift from us.

9ft to 10ft. Worth knowing: a floor-plate two-post routes its equalisation cable through a channel across the floor instead of overhead, buying back roughly the foot the overhead assembly would otherwise cost. The trade-off is a bar across the floor you drive over and can trip on. Most of our 9,000-10,999 lb range includes both floor-plate and clear-floor options — check the listing.

10ft to 12ft. Most two-post lifts in our range fit comfortably and most buyers are happy here.

12ft and above. Every model we carry fits without a second thought about overhead clearance.

The constraint people check less than they should

Ceiling height gets measured because it is visible. Slab thickness rarely gets checked, and a two-post lift puts the entire weight of the vehicle, plus real leverage through the columns, into a handful of anchors. See concrete requirements for a two-post lift before you order, not after.

Width, briefly

Height cancels the most orders, but it is not the only measurement. Two-post columns need clearance outside the vehicle plus room to open its doors between them — a genuinely single-car bay is often tighter than people expect, which is one reason asymmetric arm geometry exists.

Will it fit your garage?

A 2-post lift has one prerequisite every other spec is downstream of: does the overhead assembly clear your ceiling with the vehicle raised. Enter your ceiling height and your tallest vehicle and see what is actually left to work with.

Enter your ceiling height

Working rule, not a specification: a clear-floor two-post generally wants close to 12 inches above the raised vehicle for the overhead assembly and lock bar. Every listing states the manufacturer's own required ceiling height where we hold it (8 of our 71 models so far), and we confirm it in writing against your building before anything is ordered.
